So if you sent any updates after about April 15, please send them again.</p><p>I have a lot of typing to do.</p><p><b>UPDATE:</b> Thanks once again to RealBeer's Jeff Scott, who restored a backup from May 14 and thereby saved me a whole bunch of typing! I had to change a bit of the code, which was a challenge since I hadn't touched it since 2007, but I got it done.</p><p>Bad news: the old code is running — and failing — on the new server, and I don't yet have access to upload the new code. So that's why you're seeing a blank page there.</p><p>I'll post an update when I know more.</p><p><b>UPDATE:</b> The site is working again! There are some cosmetic glitches that I'll work on fixing, but it looks like all the functionality is back. Thanks to RealBeer's Jeff Scott for helping me through this!</p>Richard Stuevenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13436463489996483859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-579088751465272342.post-11841784411204592012023-03-12T12:43:00.001-05:002023-03-12T12:43:12.842-05:00Shower Beer <p>Seemed appropriate after 1½ hours of snowblowing and shoveling this morning!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSjS1eNCyjr7bwbVuseLF8jr4l4OEuDulP7fK2LBnzn3MaURDWLcyzs3Oo4AIOVaTN--JYssXYB-tvQNvXhIJ3iYyK05hL9jFZnfRl39XF5Xim6ZQl6UUit94Pj8nGoLegZz1kC79BwKq1ULi0vuI7b1-nfUuxMCN_mJ7axBY97cLLSaG8MYjBjH_olA/s4080/PXL_20230312_171552645.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4080" data-original-width="3072" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSjS1eNCyjr7bwbVuseLF8jr4l4OEuDulP7fK2LBnzn3MaURDWLcyzs3Oo4AIOVaTN--JYssXYB-tvQNvXhIJ3iYyK05hL9jFZnfRl39XF5Xim6ZQl6UUit94Pj8nGoLegZz1kC79BwKq1ULi0vuI7b1-nfUuxMCN_mJ7axBY97cLLSaG8MYjBjH_olA/s320/PXL_20230312_171552645.jpg" width="241" /></a></div><p>If you're not familiar with the Shower Beer, I gotta tell you, it's one of the greatest inventions ever. It's not hockey. It's not beer...or is it?</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

</a>
<p>I picked up this beauty at a nearby Costco store. Twenty-four half-liters of German beers for $75, not bad. Each one is conveniently numbered so you can pull out a beer a day.</p><p>Best of all, I had never had any of them before. In fact, I hadn't even heard of a lot of the breweries.</p>

<p><b>Yesterday: <a href="https://beermeblog.blogspot.com/2022/10/oktober-reise-day-7-prague-brewpubs.html">Prague Brewpubs</a></b><a href="https://beermeblog.blogspot.com/2022/10/oktober-reise-day-7-prague-brewpubs.html"> </a></p><p>Sunday, October 9. I know I said it was a ten-day trip, and it was if you count the days spent in the air.</p>
<p>There was some shopping to get out of the way before the last couple brewery visits, so we had a breakfast beer to set the tone. We picked up this bottle at <a href="https://umedvidku.cz/">U Medvídků</a> yesterday. Their <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?3912#20068">X-Beer 33</a> claims to be one of the strongest beers in the world, and that may well have been true some years ago, but at 12.5% abv it doesn't stand out quite so much these days. It's a good beer though, richly malty and sweet but not too sweet. The neck label says "Never drink it alone!"</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/3/3912/20068.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="207" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/3/3912/20068.png" width="83" />
</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>We checked out of the apartment and walked to the nearby Karlova shopping street. We wandered around there for a while, and I got a <a href="https://www.cooklikeczechs.com/trdelnik/"><i>trdelnik</i></a> for breakfast at <a href="https://goo.gl/maps/7HDADLh3snnw3pZd7">Sweet Dreams</a>. It's like a churro, only much bigger and fluffier. (Wikipedia calls it "a kind of spit cake", which sounds worse than it is.)</p>

<p>By now, we'd killed enough time so that the day's first brewery would be open, so we took a cab up to <a href="https://www.lodpivovar.cz/">Loď Pivovar</a>. Opened in 2017, this is a brewery and restaurant on a boat in the Vltava River.</p>

<p>They brew good beer here. The <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?24032#62357">Legie 10°</a> is an excellent Pilsner, smooth and creamy and bready and nicely bitter. The <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?24032#62358">Republika 12°</a> is a slightly heaver version that's good, but doesn't quite have the Legie's balance. The <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?24032#62359">Remorkér 12°</a> is an unusual fresh-hop Pilsner, with lots of green hop flavor and nice bitterness. And the <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?24032#62360">Bohemia 12°</a> is a single-hop Pilsner, brewed only with Saaz hops.</p>

<p>They also pour a guest beer. Today's is from the gypsy brewer <a href="https://www.crazyclownbeer.cz/ ">Crazy Clown Beer</a>, and it's a wild one. <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?29277#62361">Oh My F*** Cthulhu</a> is billed as a "Gin & Gose", and it's not something I would normally be interested in. But it was actually pretty tasty, with <em>lots</em> of salt balanced by the malt and a bit of coriander and lemon.</p>

<p>The beers were quite good here. <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?17041#62362">Fabián 10°</a> is a bready, sulfury Czech Pilsner. <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?17041#62363">Fabián 12°</a> is a slightly heavier version of the same. <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?17041#62364">Fabián 14°</a> is a very tasty — if a little light — Bock, and their excellent Märzen is <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?17041#62365">Fabián 15° Březnový</a>. Brewed for <a href="https://www.private-prague-guide.com/article/saint-wenceslas-svaty-vaclav/">St Vaclav's Day</a>, it's smooth and sweet, with hints of toast and honey.</p>

<p>Mario and Ana were flying back home to Düsseldorf this evening, so we all took a car out to the airport and said our goodbyes. Paris and I got a hotel room to save some time in the morning. We had some dinner and went to bed.</p>
<p>Our alarm Monday morning went off at 3:30am — that's 8:30pm Sunday night in Minnesota. We made our way to the gate, got on the 6:05am flight, changed planes in Amsterdam, and landed at MSP around 1:30pm, only about 17 hours after waking up.</p>
<p>And I didn't have another beer until Friday.</p>

<p>Saturday, October 8. Time to see Prague for real.</p>
<p>Cabs can get you into the general area where you want to be, but a whole lot of this town is <i>pěší zóna</i>, pedestrian zones, so there's a lot of walking involved too.</p>
<p>There are at least five breweries very near the apartment, so we walked down to the far end of the chain and worked our way back.</p>
<p>One of the buildings along the way had some interesting statues overlooking the street.</p>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>The "far end of the chain" happened to be the famous <a href="https://ufleku.cz/">U Fleků</a>. Everyone who enjoys beer wants to visit this place, and for good reason. The beers are magnificent, the food is delicious, the buildings and gardens are spectacular, and they've been at it since 1499.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>There are only two beers here, but they're both desert island beers. I had never had them before, and I can't wait to have them again. The first was a pilsner, the <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?3406#8291">Flekovský světlý ležák 13°</a>. Grainy, bready, yeasty, floral, complex. The very definition of a meal-in-a-glass. The other is their "standard" dark beer, the <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?3406#62345">Flekovský tmavý ležák 13°</a>. This is the one they'll bring you if you just ask for "a beer". Rich, toasty, malty, chocolatey, with a hint of licorice and a mild floral hop character. Both beers go nicely with their goulash and garlic soup.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>I would have been perfectly content to stay at U Fleků and enjoy these beers all day long, but there were plenty more breweries to explore.</p>
<p>Not far from U Fleků is <a href="https://www.pivovarnarodni.cz/">Pivovar Národní</a> brewers of Czech Lion beer. It's a relatively small place, founded in 2015. They also serve food, but I was still full of goulash.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/20/20451/premises.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>First up was the filtered version of their pilsner, <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?20451#55543">Czech Lion 11° Filtrovaný Ležák</a>. Light and smooth, grainy and floral, with some <a href="https://beerme.com/diacetyl.php">diacetyl</a>. Not bad.</p>
<p>We followed that with the unfiltered version of the same beer, <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?20451#55548">Czech Lion 11° Nefiltrovany Lezák</a>. A little more floral and a little less bitter than the Filtrovaný.</p>
<p>Their <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?20451#62346">Czech Lion 13° Nefiltrovany Polotmavý</a> is more like a Vienna-style lager, richly toasty and nicely sweet. This was the best of the bunch.</p>
<p>Finally, their <i>speciál na čepu</i> beer was called <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?20451#62347">Summer Ale 11</a>, an American-style pale ale. It was well past its prime.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>Up the street and around the corner is <a href="https://umedvidku.cz/">Pivovar U Medvídků</a>. It's a brewery, restaurant, hotel, and yes, a spa, where you really can take a beer bath.</p>
<p>I had the <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?3912#62348">Blondgott</a> pilsner, and it was excellent. I would have liked to try more of their beers, but the waiter didn't seem too interested in bringing us more than one, so that was that.</p>

<p>I started with their excellent <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?18675#62351">Weizenbier</a>, as good as any I've had in Germany, followed by their dark lager, <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?18675#55507">Tmavý Speciál</a> which was also fantastic.</p>

<p>A bit of lunch laid down the foundation for a couple more Tří Růzí beers. The <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?18675#62349">Výroĉní 10°</a> pilsner was another great beer, mild but still complex and interesting. And the <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?18675#62350">Videňské červené</a> was a fine Vienna-style lager.</p>

<p>The original plan was to go to the second Sharks game, but Paris was exhausted, and Mario wasn't keen, and to be honest, I was kind of feeling it too. So instead we made our way past the <i><a href="https://www.prague.eu/cs/objekt/mista/93/karluv-most">Karlův most</a></i> to a good dinner at <a href="https://www.kozlovna-apropos.cz/">Kozlovna Apropos</a>.</p>

<p>Back at the apartment, there were still beers waiting for us, and we even found a stream of the game.</p>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>So we watched the game — <a href="https://www.nhl.com/gamecenter/nsh-vs-sjs/2022/10/08/2022020002#game=2022020002,game_state=final">which the Sharks lost</a> — and had a couple nightcap beers, the first being <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?3428#62353">Gambrinus Original 10</a> from <a href="https://www.prazdroj.cz/">Plzeňský Prazdroj</a>. Clean, mild, and actually kinda bland compared to the day's earlier beers.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<p>Next up, a can of <a href="https://www.pivovarsvijany.cz/">Svijany</a> <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?3403#62354">Prémiový ležák "450"</a>. Another ordinary lager, more grainy and almost smoky.</p>

</a>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>Finally a couple from <a href="https://krusovice.cz/">Pivovar Krušovice</a>: <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?3364#62356">Ležák 12</a> and <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?3364#62355">Královský Ležák 12</a>. Both were very much like the last two, clean and mild and ordinary.</p>

<p><b>Yesterday: <a href="https://beermeblog.blogspot.com/2022/10/oktober-reise-day-5-train-to-prague.html">The Train to Prague</a></b></p><p>Friday, October 7. After a lazy (but deservedly so) day in Prague yesterday, it's time to see the sights and drink the beer. The plan is to go across the river and up the hill to <a href="https://www.klasterni-pivovar.cz/">Klášterní Pivovar Strahov</a> in the old monastery. But Paris needed to get new less-painful shoes first, so Mario and Ana went ahead while we went shopping. As it happened, there was a Foot Locker not too far away from the apartment, and the employees spoke pretty good English, and Paris got what she needed.</p>

<p>There were quite a few more beers on the menu, but I got filled up on their excellent <i>pivovarský guláš</i>.</p>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>We made our way down the hill on foot to work off that rich meal and make room for lunch (beers), and we were treated to spectacular views of this old city.</p>

<p>We continued down the hill all the way to the <a href="https://www.prague.eu/en/object/places/93/charles-bridge-karluv-most" style="font-style: italic;">Karlův most</a>, stopping for a <a href="https://www.staropramen.com/">Staropramen</a> at the Rasiam Restaurant under the bridge's west end. At the bridge's east end, we could turn right and walk a short distance to the apartment, or we could walk a bit further to the Prague Beer Museum. Guess which one we picked.</p><p>The <a href="http://www.praguebeermuseum.cz/">Prague Beer Museum</a> isn't a museum at all, but a bar with about 30 beers on tap. They have three other locations in Prague besides this very convenient one.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.bernard.cz/">Bernard</a> <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?334#7349">12° Tmavý Ležák</a> was a pretty good dark lager. The <a href="https://primator.cz/">Náchod</a> <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?3370#14554">Primátor Weizenbier 12°</a> was an excellent Hefeweizen. The <a href="https://unetickypivovar.cz/">Únětický</a> <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?14565#46113">12°</a> was a good Pilsner, and the "house beer", <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?6123#62341">Real Deal Ale 13°</a>, was a very tasty IPA brewed by <a href="http://www.pivopermon.cz/ ">Permon</a>.</p>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>There's time for one more brewery and (no surprise) it's not far away. You'd never find <a href="https://www.pivovarstaremesto.cz/">Pivovar Staré Město</a> without knowing where it was. It's below ground level on a tiny side alley between Betlémská and Náprstkova streets.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?29384#62342">Lager</a> was excellent, the <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?29384#62343">Single Hop Lager</a> was OK, and the <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?29384#62344">Amber Ale</a> was oxidized beyond recognition.</p>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p><b>And now, the point of the entire trip.</b></p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>The <a href="https://www.nhl.com/sharks">San Jose Sharks</a> were playing the first of two games against the <a href="https://www.nhl.com/predators">Nashville Predators</a> in the <a href="https://www.nhl.com/news/2022-nhl-global-series-teams-announced/c-333214498">2022 NHL Global Series</a>. The Sharks are our team; Paris and I met at the games way back in their first season at the <a href="https://icehockey.fandom.com/wiki/Cow_Palace">Cow Palace</a> in 1991. We've been to hundreds of their games, including the overtime win in the <a href="https://www.nhl.com/news/penguins-sharks-stanley-cup-final-game-3-recap/c-280888004">2016 Cup Final Game 3</a>. Thanks to Paris, I got to play in the 2008 <a href="https://www.nhl.com/sharks/sharksfoundation/fantasy-camp">Shark for a Day</a> fantasy camp. I even got a mention in the <a href="https://vault.si.com/vault/1994/05/16/711138#&gid=ci0258c0261009278a&pid=711138---069---image">May 16, 1994 Sports Illustrated</a> as "the loudest person in the loudest section" of the building.</p>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>The fans were about evenly split between Sharks and Predators, with a whole lot of Americans having made the trip. And the crowd was fun and into the game, but they were obviously soccer fans, singing songs and doing the wave during play.</p>
<p>As for the game itself, Nashville scored early, then hometown boy <a href="https://www.nhl.com/player/tomas-hertl-8476881">Tomáš Hertl</a> <a href="https://www.nhl.com/news/sharks-hertl-scores-in-nhl-global-series-homecoming/c-336158988">tied it up mid-first</a>. <p><b>Yesterday: <a href="https://beermeblog.blogspot.com/2022/10/oktober-reise-day-4-niederaula.html">Niederaula and Bad Hersfeld</a></b></p>
<p>Thursday, October 6. The train ride to Prague is a long one, and Matthias had to go back to work, so we got up early. Matthias drove us to the Fulda station to catch the 7:56 train to Nürnberg and the 10:37 train to Cheb and the 12:33 train to Praha.</p>
<p>There were signs in the Plzeň station advertising the <a href="https://www.visitczechrepublic.com/en-US/8b27e111-19a3-4744-b218-9c56d1ed5f0c/event/e-pilsner-fest">Pilsner Fest</a> to be held Friday and Saturday. It's kinda too bad we already had plans, because this year's fest celebrated the 180th anniversary of the founding of <a href="https://www.pilsnerurquell.com/">Pilsner Urquell</a>, inventors of the Pilsner style of beer.</p>

<p>We rolled into Prague a little before 4:00pm. Finding a ride to the <a href="https://goo.gl/maps/DtsxzDR5AykYngCS8">apartment</a> was damned frustrating, but after walking a mile or so around and under and through the train station — much to the chagrin of Paris' shredded feet — but we got there in the end. The view was kinda restricted, but it was a taste of what was to come.</p>

<p>Mario and Ana were flying in from Düsseldorf, and the plan was that we would all arrive around the same time, but a <a href="https://www.dw.com/en/germany-flights-canceled-as-eurowings-pilots-go-on-strike/a-63351761">pilots strike</a> threw a wrench into that. <p>Wednesday, October 5. We slept in, and Matthias whipped us up a little breakfast before we went out sightseeing. Our first stop was Bad Hersfeld's <a href="https://cityseeker.com/bad-hersfeld/1046508-schloss-eichhof">Schloss Eichhof</a>. Built between 1328 and 1372, it was closed for renovations today.</p><p>Matthias called another castle/church/monastery/museum place to see if they were open; they weren't.</p>
<p>Matthias works in freight expediting, so we drove by Amazon's <i>absolutely massive</i> new warehouse. Seriously, there are entire cities in Germany that are smaller than this building. (For the record, Matthias <i>does not</i> work for Amazon.)</p>
<p>We parked in downtown Bad Hersfeld, which is mostly a <i>Fußgängerzone</i> (pedestrian zone), and wandered around a bit. Got a coffee and a roll, and found a pharmacy that had some bandages for Paris' feet, which were being shredded by her new shoes. It was nice and quiet there on this Wednesday morning.</p>
<p>Now it's already past lunchtime, and on this trip, lunchtime is beer time. So we went back to the house to work on some more of the beers we picked up <a href="https://beermeblog.blogspot.com/2022/10/oktober-reise-day-3-niederaula.html">yesterday</a>.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p><a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?7926#62332">Kloster Urstoff</a> is a Vienna-style lager from Kloster-Brauerei Münnerstadt in Bavaria, although it actually appears to be brewed by <a href="http://www.rotherbraeu.de/">Rother Bräu</a>. It's a very good beer, nutty, toasty, and malty.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/7/7926/62332.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="215" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/7/7926/62332.png" title="Münnerstadt Kloster Urstoff" width="86" />
</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>Yet another beer from <a href="https://www.strecks-brauhaus.de/">Strecks Brauhaus</a>, their <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?7969#62333">Ostheimer Dunkel</a> is nicely toasty and sweet, nutty and smooth.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/7/7969/62333.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="208" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/7/7969/62333.png" title="Strecks Ostheimer Dunkel" width="83" />
</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>We thought we'd see if the schnitzel place was open today, so we drove instead of walked down the hill to <a href="https://www.forsthaus-niederaula.de/">zum Alten Forsthaus</a>. This time they did not disappoint! Good beers and amazing food, and really quite reasonably priced. Go there if you have the chance.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>Back at the house for a few final beers, we had another one from <a href="https://www.hochstift.de/">Fulda</a>. The <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?8200#9669">Hochstift Pils</a> had a nice floral hop flavor, but wasn't all that bitter, with a tasty bready malt character.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/8/8200/9669.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>We had to get up early the next morning to catch our train to Prague, so one last Strecks beer will do it. <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?7969#62334">Burgherren Pils</a> was a good clean malty floral beer, except for a weird soapy note.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/7/7969/62334.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>Sadly, there were still six beers in the case that I didn't get to try. But I'm sure Matthias will put them to good use!</p>

<p><b>Yesterday: <a href="https://beermeblog.blogspot.com/2022/10/oktober-reise-day-2-dusseldorf.html">Day 2 in Düsseldorf</a></b></p><p>Tuesday, October 4. We took a train from Düsseldorf to Frankfurt — topping out at 186 mph! — and another from Frankfurt to Fulda, where our friend Matthias was waiting to pick us up. Before heading to his place, we stopped at <a href="https://www.300bier.de/">Getränkefachmarkt Peter Koch</a> to pick up a few of their <a href="https://www.300bier.de/300-biersorten/">300+ beers</a>. A case of assorted twenty half-liter bottles set us back a whole $25. Unfortunately, pretty much all of their stock is sitting out on the floor, unrefrigerated, and I think that showed up in the flavor of a lot of the beers.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>I hadn't been feeling too well on the train, especially the second one which was packed full and we had to stand the whole way. But once we got to Matthias' house in the small Hessian town of Niederaula, we had to wait for the beers to chill. Matthias fired up the karaoke machine, and he and Mareike and the boys Paris and I sang, my thirst returned, and we started opening bottles.</p>

</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>First up was <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?6761#9981">Land Premium</a>, a clean, bready Vienna-style lager from <a href="https://rhoenbrauerei.de/">Rhönbrauerei Dittmar</a> in Kaltennordheim, Thüringen.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/6/6761/9981.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="220" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/6/6761/9981.png" title="Rhöner Land Premium" width="88" />
</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>Closer to home, or at least to Niederaula, the <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?8207#62327">Auerhahn Schöppchen</a> is brewed by <a href="https://www.lauterbacher-auerhahn.de/">Vogelsberger Landbrauereien</a> in Lauterbach, Hesse. It's a good clean Helles-style beer.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/8/8207/62327.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="243" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/8/8207/62327.png" title="Vogelsberger Auerhahn Schöppchen" width="97" />
</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>It was getting to be dinnertime, so we walked down the hill to <a href="https://www.forsthaus-niederaula.de/">zum Alten Forsthaus</a>, which is said to have some of the best Schnitzel around, only to find they were closed for some inexplicable reason. We tried <a href="https://www.centralgrill.de/">Central Grill & Pizza</a>, but they were closed too. So we trudged back up the hill, ordered a couple pizzas, and got back to the beer.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>So here's a Dortmunder-style Export from Bavaria. <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?7811#22322">Rother Bräu Export</a> seemed a bit <em>too</em> clean.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/7/7811/22322.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="234" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/7/7811/22322.png" title="Rother Bräu Export" width="94" />
</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>Here's another one from <a href="http://www.rotherbraeu.de/">Rother Bräu</a>. <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?7811#22364">Öko Ur-Pils</a> is smooth and floral with a mild bitterness. <i>Öko</i> means "organic", and while I find many organic beers to have an almost-offensive earthy character, this one was nicely clean.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/7/7811/22364.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>Right around this time is when the exhibition game between the <a href="https://www.nhl.com/sharks/">San Jose Sharks</a> and the <a href="https://www.eisbaeren.de/">Eisbären Berlin</a> started, so we got to experience televised European <i>beernhockey</i> for the first time.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p><a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?8200#62328">Will-Bräu Hefe Weizen</a> is from <a href="https://www.hochstift.de/">Hochstiftliches Brauhaus Fulda</a>. Sweet wheat, mild banana, like the wheat beers we enjoyed in Baden-Württemberg some years ago.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/8/8200/62328.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>The Eisbären scored early to take a 1-0 lead.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>Back to Vogelsberger for an <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?8207#62329">Auerhahn Pils</a>. Medium body, smooth, mild hops.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/8/8207/62329.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>And back to Bavaria, this time for a <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?7969#62330">Zwickl</a> from <a href="https://www.strecks-brauhaus.de/">Strecks Brauhaus</a> in Ostheim. It's a vegan beer, according to the label, and it's smooth and sweet, and that's about it.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/7/7969/62330.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>Tomáŝ Hertl scored for the Sharks in the second period to tie the game.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p><a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?8200#62331">Fuldaer Stadtbräu Helles</a> was grainy and unfortunately mildly metallic.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/8/8200/62331.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>Another one from Rhöner, their <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?6761#9979">Pils</a> was light and smooth and grainy, and not all that bitter.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/6/6761/9979.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>The Sharks pick up a goal from Steven Lorentz to end the second period with a 2-1 lead.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>By far the best beer of the day, <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?7917#56005">Will Brau Maria Ehrenberger Pilgerstoff</a> is a great Vienna-style lager. Toasty, nutty, and floral.</p>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

</a>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p>Former Nashville Predator Luke Kunin scores for the Sharks in the third period to give them a 3-1 lead and the win. The next game we see will be the Sharks vs the Predators, <a href="https://www.nhl.com/sharks/news/sharks-to-participate-in-2022-nhl-global-series/c-333223630">live in Prague</a>.</p>

<p>We took a tram to the Altstadt and made our way to <a href="https://www.zumschluessel.de/">Hausbrauerei zum Schlüssel</a>, with their magnificent <i>Schwemme</i> overlooking Bolkerstraße. We drank their Altbier, of course, but they also had a Session Beer on tap. At 4.7% abv, it was more like a clean Helles beer.</p>

<p>Very near the river is the bucket-list brewery <a href="https://www.uerige.de/">zum Uerige</a>, home of Das Alt der Stadt. A real good beer from a real good brewery for a real good band.</p>

After a layover in Amsterdam, we arrived in Düsseldorf at 1pm on Sunday the 2nd to spend a couple days with Mario, our <a href="https://beermeblog.blogspot.com/2022/01/a-visitor-from-dusseldorf.html">visitor from Düsseldorf</a> back in January. His partner Ana met us at the airport and took us to their apartment.</div><div><br /></div>
<div>Mario was still on his way home from a beer drinking boondoggle in Rīga, so Ana started opening the beers while we waited for him.</div><div><br /></div>
<div>First up were a couple cans from Ana's native Romania, <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?11179#62315">Bere Bucegi</a> and <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?6644#26562">Ursus Timişoreana</a>. Both were basic European-style lagers, but really pretty tasty.</div><div><br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/11/11179/62315.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="700" data-original-width="264" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/11/11179/62315.png" title="Bere Bucegi" width="121" /></a><a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/6/6644/26562.png" style="clear: right; display: inline; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="299" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/6/6644/26562.png" title="Ursus Timişoreana" width="120" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Ana also treated us to some amazing homemade Romanian food!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Once Mario showed up, the bottles came out, starting with <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?5444#20749">Bolten Ur-Alt</a>. If you need a reminder of just how odious New Jersey is, read on.</p><blockquote><p>The passing of this ruling means New Jersey breweries are now limited to the following:</p><p>• Hosting only 25 on-site activities per year (Events such as trivia, live music, etc.)</p><p>• Host only 52 private parties per year</p><p>• Attend only 12 off premises events per year</p><p>In addition to the above, this ruling also prohibits breweries from the following:</p><p>• Selling coffee on site</p><p>• Collaborating/ coordinating with food vendors/trucks</p><p>• Selling food or operating a restaurant</p><p>• Selling specialty cocktails using malt alcohol</p><p>• Offering a free drink to any guest</p><p>• Offer Happy Hour pricing</p></blockquote><p>And get this: during the height of COVID, New Jersey allowed breweries to offer free beer to customers to incentivize them to get the vaccine. Now, fourteen months later, it's illegal.</p><p>It's obvious that the restaurant lobby has put enough money into the New Jersey State Legislature to buy punitive measures for their competition. It's disgusting that that's allowed to happen, and it could happen to breweries near you as well.</p><p>Read the whole story at <a href="https://breweriesinpa.com/new-jersey-continues-to-be-the-armpit-of-america-strips-breweries-down-to-bare-bones/" target="_blank">Breweries in Pennsylvania</a></p>Richard Stuevenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13436463489996483859noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-579088751465272342.post-5279534974187150412022-05-20T08:44:00.005-05:002022-05-20T08:44:20.233-05:00OTAN Olutta!<p>A small brewery in Finland has launched a NATO-themed beer to mark the Nordic country’s bid to join the Western military alliance.</p><p><a href="https://www.olafbrewing.com/">Olaf Brewing'</a>s OTAN lager features a blue label with a cartoon version of a beer-drinking medieval knight in metal armor emblazoned with NATO’s compass symbol.</p><p>The beer's name is a play on the Finnish expression “Otan olutta,” which means “I’ll have a beer,” and the French abbreviation for NATO, which is “OTAN.”</p><p>CEO Petteri Vanttinen ... described the new lager as having “a taste of security, with a hint of freedom.”</p><p>Read the whole story at <a href="https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/national-international/finland-brewery-launches-nato-themed-beer-with-taste-of-security/2972491/">NBCDFW</a>.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://media.nbcdfw.com/2022/05/Olaf_OTAN_web.jpeg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=1200%2C676&w=775&h=436&crop=1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="436" data-original-width="775" height="225" src="https://media.nbcdfw.com/2022/05/Olaf_OTAN_web.jpeg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=1200%2C676&w=775&h=436&crop=1" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Richard Stuevenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13436463489996483859noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-579088751465272342.post-76120783765433779202022-05-04T16:10:00.001-05:002022-05-04T16:10:05.332-05:00A nice day for the Beer Dais<p> 60°, fairly sunny...a nice day for outdoor beers </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisoPL9DIPTuzCl5i6NjBr2mZxJov85NHGia7K7_l_TrxO502kGJn8opyYhUFZTocOy8yd-3t6polmrierqvKdyaoWej56C1Fre3u45GouUaYKJZZNhU5A_FXcYajzQZLJoK9xO-_a4yO0xM7p2yLxU-VNyv-yfhnNI2ZvxNCLFzIw2pgv0GH3aOss2_A/s4032/PXL_20220504_210816141.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisoPL9DIPTuzCl5i6NjBr2mZxJov85NHGia7K7_l_TrxO502kGJn8opyYhUFZTocOy8yd-3t6polmrierqvKdyaoWej56C1Fre3u45GouUaYKJZZNhU5A_FXcYajzQZLJoK9xO-_a4yO0xM7p2yLxU-VNyv-yfhnNI2ZvxNCLFzIw2pgv0GH3aOss2_A/s320/PXL_20220504_210816141.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Richard Stuevenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13436463489996483859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-579088751465272342.post-64108121066046484202022-05-01T11:25:00.005-05:002022-05-01T11:28:56.391-05:00Sadness and Fun in Saint Paul<p>I've had some <a href="https://twbrewing.com/">Tin Whiskers</a> canned beers, and they've been pretty tasty. On Friday, I finally paid them a visit to have some in person.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/11/11940/premises.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/11/11940/premises.png" width="240" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>The menu was kinda limited, but they had a fair <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?11940#61982">Vienna Lager</a>, a magnificent <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?11940#53691">Sweet Stout</a>, an excellent <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?11940#61983">Imperial Stout</a>, and a real good <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?11940#61984">barrel-aged version</a> of the same.</div><div><br /></div><div>Now the sad news: Tin Whiskers is <a href="https://twitter.com/TinWhiskersBrew/status/1519352750664040451">closing</a> next Saturday, May 7, after eight years in business. So if you haven't had a chance to try their beers yet, or you want to enjoy them one more time, you'd best do it soon. We picked up three crowlers of the Imperial Stout to savor later.</div><div><p><a href="https://www.google.com/maps">Google Maps</a> sent us in a bit of a circle on the short drive to <a href="https://www.metronomebrewery.com/">MetroNOME Brewery</a>, but we got there anyway. This is a new place that uses money from their beer sales to fund musical instruments, lessons, and education for underprivileged youth in the Twin Cities Metro Area.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/31/31117/premises.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" height="240" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/31/31117/premises.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>Nice place, fun people, good beers with great music-themed names. My favorite of the bunch was the <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?31117#61985">Acoustic EPA</a>, a 5.1% abv "extra pale ale" with a huge orange-citrusy hop flavor and a real nice bitterness backed by a graham cracker maltiness. But all of the beers were <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?31117">pretty tasty</a>.</p><p>Next stop: <a href="https://stpaulbrewing.com/">Saint Paul Brewing</a>, not far away. (There are a <i>lot</i> of breweries in and near downtown Saint Paul.) This is a spectacular place in the old <a href="https://www.stpaul.gov/departments/planning-and-economic-development/economic-development/development-opportunity-sites-4">Hamm's Brewery complex</a>.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Citrusy, floral, with a nice bready maltiness.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/17/17243/61958.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="439" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/17/17243/61958.png" width="176" /></a></div><div><br /></div><a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?17243#61959">#11006 Lupulin Straight Hash Homie</a> is a pretty typical hazy IPA. Thick, slick, and fizzy.<div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/17/17243/61959.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="433" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/17/17243/61959.png" width="173" /></a></div><br /><div>And finally, <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?17243#61960">#11007 Lupulin Adult Sophistication</a> is a nice Barleywine, nicely complex and really dangerous at 12.5%abv.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/17/17243/61960.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="431" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/17/17243/61960.png" width="172" /></a></div><br /><div>Back at home, we knocked back a few cans on Saturday.</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?10888#61962">#11008 Toppling Goliath Pompeii</a> is an unusually tasty hazy IPA, hopped with Mosaic. Fruity and citrusy and reasonably well balanced, it's definitely a cousin of <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?10888#56242">pseudoSue</a>. We found the can at <a href="https://www.elkrivermn.gov/204/Liquor-Operations">Northbound Liquor</a> in Elk River MN.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/10/10888/61962.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="321" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/10/10888/61962.png" width="128" /></a></div><br /><div>A lucky find at the Costco in St. Cloud was this can, <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?14241#61963">#11009 Surly Barrel-Aged Darkness 2022</a>, an incredibly tasty complex strong beer,. Its 12% abv is <i>very</i> well hidden. We saved a second can to taste next year.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/14/14241/61963.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="315" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/14/14241/61963.png" width="126" /></a></div><br /><div>Three more from Northbound, starting with <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?1381#61964">#11010 Warrior Valkyrie</a>. It's a 5.5% abv Golden Honey Ale. Good beer, a little sweet for me.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/1/1381/61964.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="318" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/1/1381/61964.png" width="127" /></a></div><br /><div>I think I tasted the next one during an <a href="https://omahabeerweek.com/">Omaha Beer Week</a> event a couple years ago, but I must not have written it down. <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?4014#61965">#11011 Stone Fear. Movie. Lions.</a> is not a bad beer, as hazy Double IPAs go. Fruity Pebbles and citrus hops. The beer's name comes from the <a href="https://what3words.com/fear.movie.lions">what3words</a> version of the location of Stone's Richmond VA brewery.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/4/4014/61965.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="315" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/4/4014/61965.png" width="126" /></a></div><br /><div>And one more from Warrior, <a href="https://beerme.com/brewery.php?1381#61966">#11012 Warrior Samurai Imperial Red</a>. Big, and yet kinda thin. Huge fruity hops and dark caramel malt. Finishes more balanced than it starts.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/1/1381/61966.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="326" height="320" src="https://beerme.com/graphics/brewery/1/1381/61966.png" width="130" /></a></div><div><br /></div>It seems like we just made a beer run, and yet the tasting fridge stands empty once more.</div>Richard Stuevenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13436463489996483859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-579088751465272342.post-67979634086920143042022-04-23T19:35:00.006-05:002022-04-24T13:11:12.160-05:00Tag des deutschen Bieres April 23 is German Beer Day, the anniversary of the Reinheitsgebot.<div><br /></div><div>And here am I with no German beers in the house.</div><div><br /></div><div>Schlechte Planung.</div>Richard Stuevenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13436463489996483859noreply@blogger.com0
